  • Festival 'helps build new cultural links'

A TEMPORARY centre opens on Thursday night to help non-Arabic speakers experience and understand the Ashoora religious festival.

Tents are being set up on open ground opposite the American Mission Hospital (AMH), in Manama, to highlight the death of Imam Hussain, grandson of Prophet Mohammed.

They are being set up by the Islamic Awareness Centre and will remain in place until February 20.

Centre information committee head, Dr Hussain Shams, said the centre would provide daily lectures in English at 8.15pm.

    Ideology

"They will be similar in all aspects to those in Arabic held in majlises, ma'tams and mosques all around Bahrain," he said.

"The first lectures will be given by Bahraini clergyman Dr Shaikh Maitham Al Salman and later by visiting Iranian clergyman Sayed Rahmanian.

"Lectures will be followed by question and answer sessions focusing on the Imam's philosophy in life, beliefs and ideology."

Publications in several languages - including Urdu, Thai and Tagalog - will also be available and distributed on a daily basis.

This is the second such event organised by the centre and follows the success of the first one last year.

"The Centre was launched last year in Ashoora as a part of events organised by the Islamic Enlightenment Society," said Dr Shams.

"Later on we decided to take a bigger role and educate people about Islam's principles and values all year round.

"The Centre is also planning to open its new premises in one of the compounds in Barbar soon."

The ************************ of the Ashoora tents has been changed this year to make it easier for people to visit.

"We are now on the main road in an area visible to everyone," said Dr Shams.

"A lot of people visited us last year, but we hope more will visit us this year."

A drawing corner will also be set up in co-ordination with the Hussain Drawing Society for Islamic Arts.

Meanwhile, the tents will be divided into separate sections for men and women.

Dr Shams said this is an excellent opportunity to build cultural understanding in a friendly atmosphere.

"Expatriate volunteers will be available on a nightly basis to help interested individuals get to know more about Imam Hussain," he added.
