Alsalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah
Seeing that this topic is taking a vast amount of dialogue between the different schools of thoughts nowadays, then a simple clarification regarding this topic (the worldly authority of the infallible) is required.
One of the simplest and most clear evidences for the Prophets and Imams (as) in having the authority over every atom in existence is the following:
Allah (swt) mentions in the Qur'an the following about aasef bin barkhiya (the representative of Prophet Sulayman (as)) :
[Shakir 27:38] He said: O chiefs! which of you can bring to me her throne before they come to me in submission?
[Shakir 27:39] One audacious among the jinn said: I will bring it to you before you rise up from your place; and most surely I am strong (and) trusty for it.
[Shakir 27:40] One who had knowledge from the Book said: I will bring it to you in the twinkling of an eye. Then when he saw it settled beside him, he said: This is of the grace of my Lord that He may try me whether I am grateful or ungrateful; and whoever is grateful, he is grateful only for his own soul, and whoever is ungrateful, then surely my Lord is Self-sufficient, Honored.
In this incident, we see that aasaf bin barkhiya, who had "
knowledge from the book" was able to bring a whole thrown before the twinkling of an eye. And we all know that aasaf bin barkhiya was not a Prophet, but rather a representative of the Prophet>
Here we make out a few points:
1) Aasaf bin Barkhiya was not a Prophet
2) Aasaf bin barkhiya had knowledge of "some" of the book
3) Aasaf bin barkhiya, with that knowledge, was able to bring a thrown in less than the twinkling of an eye.
Now we go to another verse in the Qur'an:
[Shakir 13:43] And those who disbelieve say: You are not a messenger. Say: Allah is sufficient as a witness between me and you and whoever has knowledge of the Book.
Here we realize that Allah (swt) mentions that there is a person with the "whole" knowledge of the book. And it has been narrated in the Sunni and Shi'ite sources that this verse refers to Imam Ali (as), and no one else.
So here we conclude that if the person with "some" knowledge of the book had the authority and power to bring a whole throne from one place to another within a twinkling of an eye, then the person with the "whole" knowledge of the book must have more superior power over the first person, and must be able to do more than what he can do. And we also conclude that this person who holds this authority does not have to necessarly be a Prophet himself, but rather could be the representative of the Prophet (saw), as is the case with our great Imams and leaders (peace be upon them all)
