Lover
remanded over shop tryst
AN INDIAN shop worker has been detained in custody for having sex with an under-age Bahraini girl, who worked with him.
The two fell in love and planned to get married, but the girl's mother called the police when she heard about the affair, the Lower Criminal Court heard.
The defendant, aged 26, admitted having sex with the girl who, at 20, is under the legal age of consent.
Their year-long affair was discovered when the girl was admitted to Salmaniya Medical Complex with high blood pressure, after a row with her mother.
Her mother went to the hospital, where the girl told her that she and the defendant were in love and wanted to get married.
The 48-year-old mother called the defendant to the hospital, confronted him and then called the police.
The defendant, who was arrested on February 8, admitted having sex with the girl and told police they were in love and planned to marry, the court heard.
The girl also told police they were in love and planned to marry and that she did not want to file any complaint.
She was sent to the Women's Rehabilitation Centre in Isa Town because she did not want to go home, fearing her mother and brothers would beat her, the court heard.
The public prosecution initially ordered the detention of the defendant, but ordered police to accompany him to the marriage office if he decided to marry the girl.
The case was adjourned until April 5 and the defendant was further remanded in custody.
