  • The Incident of the Sun Returning for Imam Ali (peace be upon him

The universe is filled with countless wonders and astonishing phenomena—on Earth, in the seas, and in the vastness of space. All of these are signs of the greatness of the Creator and the majesty of His design. One of these magnificent creations is the sun, a massive ball of burning gas that provides rmth and light to our planet. As Allah says in the Holy Qur’an:
"And the sun ns [its course] tord its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing." (Surah Ya-Sin, 36:38)

The Qur’an also tells us that Allah can subject any of His creations to the service of His chosen servants, especially the prophets and their successors. For example, Allah subjected the mountains and birds to Prophet David (peace be upon him), as He said:
"And remember Our servant, David, the possessor of strength; indeed, he s one who repeatedly turned [to Allah]. Indeed, We subjected the mountains [to praise] with him, exalting [Allah] in the late afternoon and [after] sunrise. And the birds were assembled, all with him repeating [praises]." (Surah Sad, 38:17-19)

Likewise, the winds were subjected to Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him):
"And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind, blowing forcefully, proceeding by his command..." (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:81-82) The Sun Returned Twice for Imam Ali (peace be upon him)

Among the miraculous signs granted to Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him)—the successor of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)—s that the sun s returned to him on two separate occasions: once during the Prophet’s lifetime, and once after the Prophet’s passing, during the Imam's caliphate.

No historical or religious records report such an event occurring for anyone else in the Islamic nation, except for Joshua son of Nun, the successor of Prophet Moses (peace be upon them both).

Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said during the Shura council:

“I ask you by Allah, is there anyone among you for whom the sun s returned, other than me? When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) rested his head in my lap and slept until the sun set, and when he awoke, he said: ‘O Ali, did you pray Asr?’ I said: ‘No, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said: ‘O Allah, return the sun for Ali, for he s in obedience to You and Your Messenger.’”

    The Imam also said:
“Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, returned the sun for me twice, and He did not return it for anyone else in the nation of Muhammad (peace be upon him) except me.”
    ???? Al-Khisal, p.580

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated:
“The Prophet prayed Asr, and Ali had not yet prayed it. Allah revealed to the Prophet while Ali’s head s in his lap. When the Prophet rose and the sun had set, he said: ‘O Ali, have you prayed Asr?’ He replied: ‘No, O Messenger of Allah.’ So the Prophet said: ‘O Allah, Ali s obeying You, so return the sun for him.’ And the sun s indeed returned.”

    Testimonies of the Companions

Ibn Abbas s asked about Imam Ali, and he replied:

“By Allah, you have mentioned one of the two weighty things. He s the first to testify to the two declarations, prayed in both directions (before and after the Qibla changed), pledged in both allegiance ceremonies, s granted the two grandsons (Hasan and Husayn), the sun s returned for him twice after setting, he unsheathed his sword twice, and is the companion of the two battles. In the nation, he is like Dhul-Qarnayn. That is my master, Ali ibn Abi Talib.”
    ???? One Hundred Virtues, p.144

    Asma’ bint Umays reported:
“Ali once came to pray Asr with the Prophet, but the Prophet had already finished, and revelation s descending upon him. Ali supported the Prophet until the revelation ceased and the sun had set. The Prophet asked: ‘Have you prayed, O Ali?’ He said: ‘No, because you were receiving revelation.’ The Prophet then turned to the Qibla and said: ‘O Allah, Ali s in Your obedience. Return the sun for him.’ She said: ‘The sun rose again with a grinding sound like that of a millstone, until it returned to its position at Asr. Ali prayed, and when he finished, the sun set again with the same sound, and night returned and the stars appeared.’”

    The Incident in Babylon

    Jawriyah ibn Mus’hir narrated:

“We were returning with the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib, from the battle against the Kharij. As we passed through Babylon and the time of Asr came, the Imam said: ‘This land is cursed. It s punished three times and is not lawful for any Prophet or successor of a Prophet to pray on it. Whoever nts to pray, let him move to the sides.’ People moved ay and prayed, but Ali rode on.

I followed him and swore to pray only as he did. We crossed a bridge, and the sun had already set. He noticed my concern and said: ‘Did you doubt?’ I said: ‘Yes, O Commander of the Faithful.’

Then he dismounted, performed ablution, and uttered words in a language I couldn’t understand—perhaps Heb—then called out, ‘Prayer!’

I swear by Allah, the sun emerged between two mountains with a grinding sound. Ali prayed Asr and I prayed with him. When we finished, night returned as it s before. He then recited: ‘So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great’ and added: ‘I asked Allah by His Greatest Name, and He returned the sun for me.’”

    Scholarly Confirmation

Shaykh al-Mufid (may Allah bless his soul) said:

“Among the miraculous signs Allah revealed at the hands of Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) is what has been widely narrated by scholars and poets alike—the return of the sun for him twice: once during the Prophet’s lifetime, and once after his passing.”
    ???? Al-Irshad, 1/345

Poetic Tribute by Hassān ibn Thābit

Repentance is not accepted from any sinner
Except through love for Ibn Abi Talib

The Prophet’s brother and his son-in-law,
No companion equals such a kinship

Who can match Ali, for the sun
Was returned to him after it had set?

    The sun returned shining bright
As though it had never set that night
