Bismillah al-Rahmaan al-Raheem
(Indeed I make complaint of my anguish and my sorrow unto Allah)
The Holy Qur'an, Joseph (12): 86
In response to numerous enquiries from the faithful across the globe about the assault that took place against the Sayyida ladies – the wife, sisters, daughters, and other relatives of the Grand Marje' and authority on Islam, the late Imam Muhammad Shirazi – in the shrine of lady of Fatima the Ma'soomeh peace be upon her, in the holy city of Qum, this statement is released.
The ladies in question had gone to the graveside of the late Imam Shirazi to recite Fatihah for his soul and organise a mourning majlis, such has been their practice since the death of the late Imam Shirazi more than four years ago.
The ************************ of the grave, which was by the entrance of the shrine, was accessible to both men and women. However, since about a month ago, the authorities annexed the site of the grave to the area dedicated to women only and therefore it became cordoned off in a corner of that area, accessible to women only.
As they normally did, the daughters and other relatives of the late Imam, as well other faithful ladies went to the sacred graveside on the eve of 4th Rajab, and during the course of the majlis that was held on the occasion of the martyrdom of Imam Ali al-Hadi peace be upon him, a number of [staff] men and women assaulted those attending the majlis while they were carrying batons and shouting verbal abuse against the majlis participants. The ladies in question were terrified at the site and sound of the assailants and then they were subjected to vicious and brutal beatings with the batons the assailants were carrying. As a result of this totally unjustified assault that breaches the sanctity of the holy shrine and that of the majlis, the victims sustained very serious injuries that include broken bones in their bodies. Thereafter the assailants took the victims to a detention room located within the compound of the shrine.
When the news reached the house of the late Imam Shirazi, Allamah Sayyid Hussayn Shirazi and Sayyid Kadhem Faali went to the holy shrine to investigate the matter, when they too were arrested and detained. The ladies were then taken to the city's Saheli prison. The ladies were ultimately released in the afternoon of the 4th Rajab – more than twenty hours after their terrifying ordeal started.
The family of the late Imam Shirazi vehemently condemns this appalling and barbaric behaviour and calls on the authorities to apprehend and prosecute those who hold no honour or respect for the sanctity of the shrine of the lady Ma'soomeh, and nor for the grave of the late Imam Shirazi, or his daughters and sisters.
We should also remind the authorities that the family of the late Imam Shirazi did not wish to bury the late Imam in the shrine of lady Ma'soomeh peace be upon her, but rather, in accordance with his will, wanted to bury him temporarily in the prayer hall adjacent to his house until it would be feasible to transport him to the holy city of Karbala, Iraq, to bury him in the Shirazi mausoleum in the shrine of Imam Hussayn peace be upon him. However, the authorities abducted his body during the funeral procession, and buried him in the locality of his current burial against his will and that of his family. They must thus face the consequences of their deed. In line with the traditional assembly used for the graves of the grand ayatollahs, we demand that a similar assembly is allowed to be constructed for and placed upon the grave of the late Imam.
At the same time we call upon the followers and devotees of the late Imam to adorn themselves with patience and perseverance and not accuse anyone [of this appalling crime] until those responsible for such vile conducts are identified – those who desecrated the sanctity of Islam, and the magnificent station of the Marje' inside the sanctuary of Ahl al-Bayt peace be upon them.
We lodge our complaint to Allah and to Ahl al-Bayt peace be upon them and to our lady Fatima the Ma'soomeh peace be upon her.
