Dear all
السلام عليكم ورحمة الله
Here is my first participation in yahosein. I hope you find it interesting, and worth reading.
A couple of months ago, I was visiting a relative of mine in Saudi. He happens to have a 10-year-old son, who was playing a video game whilst I was chatting with his dad. The game he was playing was quite familiar to me. I asked him about its name. He replied that he doesn’t really know! I checked out its cover and I was shocked to see that it actually was “Grand Theft Auto.”
That particular game is known in the West to be particularly violent, with plenty of sexually-explicit contents. In England, for instance, that game is meant to be played solely by grown-ups, with an age restriction of 18!
I went through the stack of video games he owned, and noticed that he had no less than 5 CD’s of games meant to 18 year-olds and over.
I asked him where he got those video games, and the answer was “a nearby store.”
It was extremely upsetting to find out that our children, and teenagers are lawfully allowed to purchase such disturbing games.
It’s quite clear that the age restriction of such games has been assigned carefully. And yet there isn’t a single agency in Saudi Arabia that enforces those age-limits.
In addition to those distressing video games, I also condemn the fact that there isn’t a time restriction over broadcasting x-rated movies and video clips in our countries.
Even in the “atheistic West” no self-respecting channel would broadcast x-rated programs before 9 pm! And if it does, there would be penalties and serious consequences.
I personally hold our Ministries of Information responsible for this problem. Unless they start enforcing proper laws governing the trade of x-rated games and movies, there will be serious repercussions.
Nonetheless, parents should also be responsible for their children’s exposure to distasteful materials, and take the blame if their kids turned to be hostile or poorly behaved.
Yours truly,
Immortal
